— UNDERSTANDING ADHD

This is what ADHD actually looks like

It’s not just a childhood phase or simply "trouble focusing." Adult ADHD is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that fundamentally affects how your brain regulates attention, energy, emotions, and executive function.

Inattention & Executive Dysfunction

  • Chronic procrastination, "time blindness," and poor estimation of tasks
  • Inability to initiate tasks, even ones you genuinely want to do (ADHD paralysis)
  • Constantly misplacing items, forgetting details, and general disorganization
  • Severe mental exhaustion from "masking" to appear neurotypical

Hyperactivity & Hyperfocus

  • Intense periods of "hyperfocus" where you lose track of hours on a single interest
  • Physical restlessness, fidgeting, or a constant "racing" internal monologue
  • Impulsive decision-making, interrupting others, or speaking without thinking
  • Struggling to regulate intense emotions or frustration (Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria)

You are not lazy, and you are not broken. ADHD simply means your brain runs on a different operating system. Once you stop trying to force neurotypical standards on yourself, you can learn to work with your brain instead of constantly fighting against it.

— GOT QUESTIONS?

Common questions about ADHD treatment

Seeking an ADHD diagnosis as an adult can feel validating, but also overwhelming. Here are clear, honest answers to the most common questions our clients ask before beginning their neurodivergent journey.

ADHD doesn't suddenly develop in adulthood; it is a neurodevelopmental condition present since childhood. However, many people—especially those who are highly intelligent or who learned to heavily "mask" their symptoms—fly under the radar. Often, it isn't until the intense executive functioning demands of adulthood (career, parenting, managing a household) cause those early coping mechanisms to break down that the ADHD becomes obvious.

This is the classic paradox of ADHD! ADHD is not actually a deficit of attention; it is an inability to regulate attention. ADHD brains operate on an "interest-based" nervous system rather than an importance-based one. If a task provides high dopamine (like a new hobby or a crisis), you can hyperfocus on it effortlessly. If it doesn't provide dopamine (like a boring email), your brain physically struggles to initiate it, regardless of your willpower.

No. When prescribed and titrated correctly, ADHD medication should never erase your personality. Its goal is simply to quiet the "noise" in your brain and provide the baseline dopamine you need to direct your own focus. If you ever feel "numb," blunted, or overly jittery, it usually means the dose is too high or the specific medication isn't the right fit. Our psychiatrists work closely with you to find your exact "sweet spot."

In the ADHD community, there is a saying: "Pills don't build skills." Medication is an incredible tool that clears the fog and gives you the ability to focus, but it doesn't tell you what to focus on. Therapy and coaching are essential for unlearning years of shame, building external organizational systems, and learning how to work with your unique brain rather than forcing it to act neurotypical.

This is extremely common. In fact, many adults with undiagnosed ADHD develop anxiety and depression as secondary conditions because it is so exhausting trying to keep up with daily life while battling executive dysfunction. Our clinical team takes a comprehensive approach. Often, treating the underlying ADHD significantly reduces the secondary anxiety and depression, but we are fully equipped to treat complex, co-occurring conditions simultaneously.
